Getting back into it

Well, this past week, I got out there again and did two hikes.

The first was an urban hike…Riverwalk in Augusta, GA. It is a paved path that runs along the Savannah River in downtown Augusta. I did this hike on Sunday, and I found it sparsely populated with people. This suited me nicely.

It was the first time that I had put on my hiking boots in two months. I found that my feet were comfortable and that my heels were well-healed.

It was a beautiful walk of approximately 2 miles.

The second hike was done a few days later and was actually a wooded trail. It was at Langley Pond and was supposed to be a loop trail. However, the trail was not well marked and I ended up following a park road for the last part to get back to my car. That day I hiked 3 miles in hot, humid weather and came close to heat stroke. It was a medium hike and enjoyable for the first 2-2.5 miles.

The good news is that I survived it with air conditioning in the car, a cool shower at home, and lots of fluids afterwards. And, yes, I had water with me. Still, it left me with a determination to get back out there.

However, I did end up with a blister on my bunion and a sore little toe…both of which needed rest to heal.

I have two more hikes planned, if possible for this week. One is at the Audobon Society preserve…3 miles. The other is at Henderson Preserve…the place I got lost the first hike I ever did. This trail will be about 2 miles and a different part of the preserve.

My only issue in getting these done is the weather. Our Southern clime here in this part of South Carolina is very humid with quick storms at times. So planning will need to be done to prevent the possible heat stroke and for safety.
