Magazines: my love/hate relationship

Much like most people, I enjoy getting things in the mail. I look forward to the delivery of an ordered item, similar to a child watching for Santa.

In the past, I have been of the attitude that a magazine must be read in its entirety. As a result, those that have come to my home have accumulated until I begin to look like a hoarder.

As I got older, the only magazines I received were those that came automatically with memberships (AARP, SC Living [my electric company], AirBnb [as a host], Hadassah, and Go [AAA]). (I may have missed one or two that come less than monthly.) These come whether or not I want them.

When Ed died, I cancelled all his subscriptions which were mostly to food/cooking magazines, some of which I kept the back issues he had as they were good magazines. BUT, they served no purpose for me as a monthly issue as I was not cooking much at that time and could not afford the magazine price.

Recently, I broke down and ordered Backwoods Home, which is aimed at homesteaders. However, I was hoping to find recipes I could make with my garden foods, ways to garden more ecologically, as well as get ideas for how to care for my small plot of land in a friendlier fashion.

The first issue has arrived! It has soup recipes and how to sharpen old tools. Both are articles that I will enjoy reading.

So now I have caught the magazine bug and ordered a digital copy of Simplify and all the back issues. This month’s copy is about self-care. Can’t wait to start checking it out!

I guess the bottom line is: does this magazine add to my life enough to make it cost effective or not? Since Backwoods Home cost me $10 for the year, the answer is yes already. I suspect the $20 lifetime subscription to Simplify will also pay for itself.

Maybe I am ready to welcome some monthly magazines…those that help me change and grow.
