May: celebrations and struggle

This is my birthday month. I am now 71. Sounds old, doesn’t it? I don’t feel that age much of the time, but I am aware that my body does not have the strength and stamina that it once had.

This year, I started the month with two weeks of illness. First, I thought it was just a bad cold, then the flu, and finally settled on allergies. Once I started the anti-histamine, I started getting better. TWO weeks!

Then there was the prep for the colonoscopy, which is a must at my age…and with my past history of polyps. I made a mistake with the calculation of my prep liquid (powder mixed with desired drink) and, instead of mixing it in a gallon of drink, I mixed in half a gallon! I thought I sailed through getting all the liquid drunk, but I had doubled the dosage! Oh, well. Survived and test completed. Another week gone. Allergies abating.

Next I was trimming the hedges. I was nearly done when I made the mistake of putting my left hand on the blade while my right hand was on the trigger. It took only seconds for me to drop the hedger and run for the house. I quickly discovered that I could not stop the bleeding enough to assess the cut and, even if I could, it would be hard to bandage the left hand with the right. So…gauze and pressure held while I drove one handed to the urgent care place. About 2 hours later, bleeding stopped…glue applied…splint on and home again.

Now the issue here was that I am sensitive (allergic?) to adhesive…so the splint was off the next day. (It was to protect the hand while the glue dried.) And, over the past week or so, the bandage has been changed multiple times (yep, learned how to do it one-handed)…so that now I sometimes leave it open to air. And, I am sensitive to all adhesives…even glue! Go figure!

However, I have completed the hedges and finished the mowing and weed-whacking of the backyard. Still have the front yard to do today, which is about 1/3 the size of the backyard.

This was also the month of birthdays in my family (brother, cousins, step-daughter), anniversaries, and Mother’s Day. Lots of reasons to reach out and acknowledge those family members. Thankfully, we are all at an age where cards work and gifts are not required.

It has been an eventful month so far. And, it has a week to go!
